Red, White, and Blue!

We learned so much this week about our country! From history to current procedures in our government, our minds were going!

In honor of Presidents’ Day, we focused on our presidents Wednesday and Thursday. Some of our topics of discussion included the responsibilities of a president, presidential elections and voting, and what presidents appear on different coins. We also discussed George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and looked at the characteristics of the American flag.

We enjoyed constructing flags out of Popsicle sticks, dotting our own flags, doing coin rubbing, and sorting; and talking about what we would do it we were president. Check out some of our fun answers about what we would do if we were president!

We also discussed what it means to be a good citizen of our nation. We made a good citizenship mural together that you can find on our classroom bulletin board! We tied this theme in with our Bible theme for the week on loving one another like Jesus. Since we didn't have much time to talk about Zacchaeus last week, we spent this week on this story as well. Maybe your child can sing the Zacchaeus song we have learned! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkd-QFD7vMA

We also worked on a variety of literacy and math skills this week! We did a great job with the concept of "greater than" and "less than"! We will continue this, as well as introduce subtraction next week. We also introduced counting by fives with nickels and counting by tens with dimes! Wow! We are continuing to learn more and more sight words, using them to build and read many sentences. We truly are learning so much!

On Friday, we had a fun day focusing on the author Laura Numeroff (one of my favorites)! We read two of her books, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Give a Pig a Pancake. We painted pancakes and used chocolate chips to count/work on number recognition. We even had fun making pancakes and cupcakes with play dough. What a fun day!

Here are a few things to ask your child this week. Can you...
1. Read the poem added to their reading folder? (We did very well with this poem!)
2. Work on your review booklet added to the reading folder?
3. Count by fives with nickels and tens with dimes with you?
4. Make the numbers 16 and 17?
5. Sing the song about Zacchaeus?

We are reading so well!

We had fun talking about the American flag!

We continue to work on our last names and phone numbers.

Coin sorting fun!
