Pet Week!

Pet week was another fabulous week! Mrs. Andrea and I are simply amazed by this class... They are truly one of the kindest, most thoughtful, joyful, and well-behaved groups I have ever worked with. Being their teachers is a great joy. Thank you for letting us be a part of these awesome kiddos' lives this year.

We enjoyed lots of pet books this week, including Ten Little Puppies (with which we practiced counting down and rhyming), Which Pet? (which allowed us to discuss what foods different pets need to eat), and Cat and Dog (a great book about helping our friends). Our letter focus this week was letter T... We had fun with our "Five Little Turtles" poem and getting introduced to our friend Tommy the Tiger. We practiced the poem "Tommy Tiger" all week and then used it to find the letter T in text. You can find this poem in your child's poetry folder. We continued to use our shape song to learn our shapes and continued to work on identifying/writing the numbers 1 and 2.

Because everyone is doing such an awesome job at their centers, we have been able to do so much! We are so proud of them. I spend 15 minutes with each group (of four students) each day focusing in on literacy skills. We are working on building and writing names (depending on their familiarity with these skills), writing letters (or words), finding letters in text, and reading skills. Each week, we will work with a poem as well as work with a sight word easy reader. These books allow for building of the literacy skills they will need next year in kindergarten.

We enjoyed making our very own pet rock this week. Those sneaky pet rocks were so quiet that we forgot to send them home with their owners! (We will do so on Wednesday.) We made info sheets about these pets that went in their portfolios... Some were quite hilarious! We also enjoyed painting with feathers, building pets out of shapes (that also went in portfolios), making name dogs, and gluing together puppy ears to wear around on Friday. These crafts allowed us to practice shapes, cutting, gluing, pinching for pencil grip (with feathers), and counting!

Everyone is doing such a great job with our independent centers! Some of the other skills we worked on this week were counting one-to-one with dog bones by feeding our "dog" and lacing (an important fine motor skill) by lacing cat whiskers onto cats and colored ribbons through animalsOne of our favorite activities this week was getting to take care of our "pets" in our classroom vet office! Everyone had the opportunity to choose a pet and use all of our vet tools to do check-ups on their pet. They did a great job!

To complete our August Bible study, we simply talked about the fact that God loves us so much that it could never be measured. We tried to use measuring tools to measure it and concluded that nothing could hold or measure all of God's great love. We practiced the song "God Loves Us" by using our rhythm sticks!

See if your child can do the following things this week...

1. Help you build or write the letters T and M (even out of one of their favorite snacks)!
2. Find three things in your house that start with the letter T.
3. Write (or trace) their name.
4. Play a game that requires one-to-one counting.
5. Help you take care of your family pet (or pretend to take care of a stuffed animal pet).
