Even though we weren't together Friday, we had great days together Wednesday and Thursday!
We had a great time discussing jobs in our community as well as what jobs we might like to have when we grow up! We sang a fun letter song about all kinds of different jobs, worked on our sight words with a fun poem about community helpers, and got to decorate a community helper hat (that we will have to send home next week).
We spent most of Wednesday focused on the work of a dentist and on dental health (fitting for dental health month in February). We did a fun science experiment with an egg, soda, and water to show the effects of sugar and soda on our enamel. We also worked on our letter writing skills (and initial sound identification) by writing on teeth and then brushing them clean! We also worked on our one-to-one correspondence by measuring toothbrushes and counting out teeth with a fun roll and cover game.
On Thursday, we also worked on our cutting skills and number ordering with a fun community helper puzzle. We did an excellent job with our sight word book this week called Our Jobs. We have been working hard on using pictures and initial sounds to help us identify unknown words, identifying sight words we know, and pointing to each word we read. We are becoming such good readers!!

We have been trying to provide more dramatic play opportunities in our classroom as well. This is so important at this age for imagination building and social development. This week, we had a bakery and a doctor's office in our room. We also had a writing station with a mailbox to pretend to be mail carriers and the sensory bin set up to clean "teeth" as a dentist! We even got to pretend to be construction workers as we hammered letters and numbers!
The highlights of our week were definitely the three visits from community helpers! We were blessed with a visit from a dentist, a pharmacist, and a nurse!! We are so thankful for these workers in our community and the fact that they are parents of our very own friends! We were scheduled to have a firefighter and nurse on Friday as well, but hopefully we can hear from them soon!
We plan to do some of our other community helper activities we had planned for today next Wednesday!

We rolled the dice and found the correct
number to cover up with a "tooth".
We are becoming great writers!
We had fun measuring toothbrushes.
Measuring with nonstandard units is a great activity for at-home counting!
We love to read!
Clipping the letters onto sight words.
We saved these to show to our firefighter
visitor (whenever he gets to come)!
We continue to work on our last names.
Just a little construction worker hammering!
Learning about what a pharmacist does!
And what a dentist does...
And the job of a nurse!
When I grow up, I want to be a...
If those smiles don't make you smile, I don't know what would! :)
We can't wait to see everyone next week to finish our community helper theme and do some fun Valentine activities!
