Into the Arctic!

Brrr! Our room turned into the Arctic this week as we learned lots of fun facts about animals in the Arctic... penguins, polar bears, seals, walruses, moose, and more!

Our letter of focus for the week was the letter V. We also worked on the sight word "my" (mainly through our easy reader about Arctic animals that we read in guided reading groups). We spent some time reviewing letters with a fun polar bear letter Bingo game!

We enjoyed cutting and building our very own penguins (which can be found in the hall) as well as painting polar bear silhouettes. We also read about polar bears and wrote down polar bear facts on bear tracks in our room, built our own igloos with marshmallows, learned about the concepts of adaptation, hibernation, and migration; and fed number fish to the giant penguin who came to visit our room! We even got to learn about penguin feathers and how they repel water. Our science experiment of the week was testing out how blubber helps animals stay warm in the Arctic. While Crisco might not be blubber, it showed us how blubber can block the cold of ice water!

We worked on a variety of skills this week! What a smart bunch we are!  We continued to work on spelling and writing our last names, as well as introduced learning our mom's cell phone number and our address. Working on shape identification and drawing was another focus this week. We have made it to the number 12 and will begin teen numbers next week!

To add to our fun, we got to spend some time in our classroom "bear cave" each day! We also had a bear escape from our cave, so we had to go on a bear hunt to find him of course! We also enjoyed all going on a penguin letter hunt in our room.

Our Bible focus of the week was on Jesus healing the paralytic that was brought to him on a mat by his friends. How amazing this was! We were reminded that Jesus really can do ANYTHING!

Here are some things to ask your child this week! Can you....

1. Identify the letter V and its sound?

2. Write the numbers 11 and 12?
3. Build your last name? Write your last name?
4. Tell me three fun facts about a polar bear?
5. Identify a cylinder, sphere and cube?

We made our own Arctic animal graphs this week!

These penguin color samples helped us learn about penguin feathers!

Counting with fish!

Our new tracing mats are helping us
learn our last names, phone numbers,
and addresses.

This fun craft went along with our Bible story.

Free play is so important for so many reasons... Building social skills,
problem solving skills, and creativity (just to name a few)!

The green room got updated this week!

We enjoyed our penguin letter hunt.
